CHAPEL HILL – The “Meet the Freshman” series continues as we highlight California native and Torrey Pines High School graduate Dewey Egan

Egan was an Inside Lacrosse Top 100 recruit, ranked 14th in the class. He was also a Top-five ranked attackman in the class by Inside Lacrosse, 2021 US Lacrosse All-America, 2021 US Lacrosse Bob Scott Award recipient, 2021 Under Armor All-America, and Nike NASG All-America.

Clifton: When did you start playing lacrosse, and how did you get into it?

Egan: I started playing lacrosse in third grade competitively. What got me into it was that my two older brothers played lacrosse, and I just followed whatever they did.

Clifton: Why did you choose to come to UNC?

Egan: I chose to come to UNC because of the academics, the school, and the campus. The team and coaches were amazing when I came here on my official visit. It was pretty much a combination of all those things why I chose to go to UNC.

Clifton: How does it feel to play lacrosse at the highest level with your brother as one of your teammates?

Egan: To be honest, it’s surreal. At practice, I look over, and it’s wild to play on the same field as my brother. I’m really close with my brother, so it’s a blessing to be able to see him every day.

Clifton: What has your interaction been like with teammates and coaches since you have been on campus?

Egan: It’s been fantastic. All of the guys on the team have been so welcoming. Our freshman class is really close, and we hang out together all of the time. It’s been great, and I couldn’t ask for a better situation with my teammates and coaches.

Clifton: In your eyes, has there been an adjustment period for you coming from playing in high school then transitioning into college, and describe what that experience has been like?

Egan: Everybody is really good at this level. The pace of play is fast, and a lot more IQ stuff goes into it as well. The consistency of practicing every day is a significant change because, in high school, we did not have that big of a workout load.

Clifton: Talk about your playing style and what you bring to the team here at UNC?

Egan: My playing style is definitely physical. I am a physical dodger, and I shoot a lot. One of the things I have been working on since I got here is passing.

Clifton: What kind of music do you listen to when you are getting ready for a game?

Egan: I like listening to chill music. I have never been the type of guy who gets pumped up listening to rap or rock music. I listen to country music or something calm to focus on the game.

Clifton: What celebrity or famous athlete would you like to meet?

Egan: Well, growing up as a Patriots fan, I would have to say Rob Gronkowski will be a cool guy to meet. He’s a funny guy, and I have always loved watching him play.

Clifton: What talent do you possess that not a lot of people know?

Egan: I know how to juggle. I learned how to in PE class in elementary school.

Clifton: Final question, when you think about your college career, is there anything that you’re looking to accomplish in your college career as a team and individually.

Egan: Team-wise and individually, the goal is always to win an ACC Championship and National Championship. It would also be great to win a championship this year with my brother. That would be cool to do, and I know all of the guys are working toward that goal.
